A group of HITN members represented our network during the 67th edition of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York (NPRDP).
The HITN delegation was led by President and CEO Michael D. Nieves, who, along with other members from various departments, including Government and Community Affairs, marched through the streets with the New York City Mayor’s contingent.
True to tradition, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York flooded Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue with Taíno-inspired sounds, vibrant bomba dances, and the joy that characterizes the Puerto Rican diaspora residing in the city and surrounding areas.
This year, the celebration was dedicated to the municipality of San Germán in Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican communities in Hawaii. HITN is preparing a special report to highlight the Puerto Rican heritage of these groups residing in the 50th state of the U.S.
In addition to the parade festivities, the NPRDP also “fulfills its mission by producing and hosting a series of events and programs designed to celebrate and promote art, culture, and education in the Puerto Rican community, both in Puerto Rico and the mainland U.S. NPRDP is committed to promoting higher education through its annual scholarship program, having expanded the NPRDP Scholarship Program 20-fold since 2013, awarding a total of $200,000 to 100 high school and college students of Puerto Rican descent in 2018.”
