HITN and the Brooklyn Navy Yard (BKNY) joined forces to celebrate Women’s History Month, Thursday, March 23 with an event that took place in HITN’s studios.
During the celebration, HITN’s President and CEO, Michael D. Nieves, highlighted the essential role women play in the industry and was proud to celebrate their achievements.
The event featured a special discussion with two of NPR’s top podcast hosts, B.A. Parker from Code Switch and Brittany Luse from It’s Been a Minute, along with Emmy award winner Caridad de la Luz aka La Bruja from Nuyorican Poets Café.
“It’s an honor to be a latina when we’re talking about representation. And what it means to be invited to the party or to not be invited to the party. Do we want to be invited to the party or do we want to create our own party?, ” said La Bruja.
The conversation focused on the experiences of women filmmakers of color with the Academy and how to move forward. It also included a 2023 take on Parker’s seminal article The Price of Being Invited to the Party.
Overall, the Women’s History Month celebration was a great success, bringing together media professionals and highlighting the contributions of women in the industry. We thank BKNY for co-hosting this important event; and we look forward to partnering on this celebration next year.
