HITN marked the third installment of its Puerto Rican Heritage Series by celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Puerto Rican pioneers who have shaped society through leadership, resilience, and dedication.

On Friday, November 15, community leaders, elected officials, and members of the Puerto Rican and Hispanic communities gathered at the Hunter College Center for Puerto Rican Studies to honor this year’s distinguished honorees: Vanessa Calderón-Rosado, Angel Luis Ortiz, Carmen E. Arroyo, Luis V. Gutiérrez, and the late Dolores ‘Lolita’ Lebrón.

“Puerto Ricans have long been an integral part of this nation’s progress, contributing across every field imaginable,” said Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of HITN. “This year, we honor the pioneers—those trailblazers who paved the way for us, who made a difference in everything from education and business to art, science, and fighting for justice. Their stories are a testament to resilience and strength, reminding us that our pioneers are made of pura cepa. By teaching about them, we ensure that future generations have powerful role models to follow.”

The honorees’ achievements reflect the diverse contributions of Puerto Ricans to society:

  • Carmen E. Arroyo
The first Puerto Rican woman elected to the New York State Assembly, a trailblazer in the history of the state legislature.
  • Luis V. Gutiérrez
A visionary leader whose career began on the Chicago City Council and extended to 25 years of impactful service in the U.S. Congress.
  • Ángel Luis Ortiz
A former teacher and councilmember, dedicated to advocating for educational equity and empowering communities.
  • Vanessa Calderón-Rosado
The first Latina appointed to the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, a historic achievement in education leadership.
  • Dolores ‘Lolita’ Lebrón (Posthumously)
A fearless advocate for Puerto Rican independence, whose courage brought international attention to the fight against colonial rule.

The evening featured the premiere of five short films, each capturing the honorees’ inspiring journeys. Following the screenings, Nieves presented commemorative plaques to each honoree—or, for Lebrón, a posthumous recognition accepted by Anne Jones, a close collaborator.

The Puerto Rican Heritage Series has become a hallmark of HITN’s programming during Puerto Rican Heritage Month, underscoring the network’s dedication to celebrating the contributions of the Puerto Rican community. By showcasing stories of perseverance and triumph, the series helps expand the landscape of the Puerto Rican Diaspora and works to ensure these legacies become an important and vibrant part of the American narrative.

The series is now available on HITN’s digital platforms and the Puerto Rican Heritage website.
