The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) recently hosted its 2023 Summer Executive Committee and Business Board of Advisors (BBA) Meeting in the city of San Francisco.
This gathering was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Mayor London Breed of San Francisco and the esteemed Speaker Emerita, U.S. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.
The event assembled Hispanic legislators from across the nation, all converging to engage in policy sessions focused on topics affecting Hispanic communities. Among these crucial discussions, sustainability and extended producer responsibility emerged as pressing concerns, with participants keen on navigating the complexities of a competitive market.
An auspicious moment during the event was the warm welcome extended by NHCSL’s Vice President for Membership, Representative Ángel Matos from Puerto Rico, who greeted the incoming class of 2022 with words of encouragement and support. He emphasized the significance of these exceptional leaders, recognizing that some of them may encounter unique challenges as they serve as the only or one of a few Hispanic legislators in their respective states. In such instances, NHCSL stands resolutely as a pillar of support for these individuals.
As a senior member of the BBA and advisor to the legislators present at the summit, Michael D. Nieves, President, and CEO of HITN helped to shape the conversations and brings a vital Latino perspective to the forefront. In his own words, Mr. Nieves highlighted the undeniable importance of including diverse, Hispanic, voices in shaping the nation’s future plans.
Looking ahead, the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators is set to convene its full membership at its 2023 Annual Summit, to take place in the historic city of Philadelphia from November 30th to December 3rd.
