Nieves, who heads the largest U.S.-based nonprofit Spanish-language TV network, was honored for his four decades of dedication to preserving and promoting Puerto Rican culture, community education and faith-based work.

“We acknowledged and celebrated members of the Puerto Rican community and diaspora whose life’s work is reflective of our identify, starting with Mike Nieves, President & CEO of the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN), an entrepreneur and philanthropist whose impact in the Puerto Rican community runs deep”, said Billy Ocasio, Executive Director of NMPRAC.

The Raíces Gala, held at Galleria Marchetti, is NMPRAC’s largest fundraiser, playing a vital role in supporting the museum’s mission of providing free admission and serving as a prominent cultural hub in Chicago. The event celebrates the richness of Puerto Rican arts and heritage, and the funds raised help ensure the museum’s continued impact on the community.

One of the evening’s highlights was the presentation of the prestigious National Ceiba Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Puerto Rican culture. This year, actress and producer Roselyn Sánchez was honored with the award, while renowned chef Raúl Correa received the National Ceiba Award in Culinary Arts for his work in Puerto Rican cuisine.

Hosted by chef-influencer Omallys ‘Omi’ Hopper, the gala brought together cultural advocates and community leaders for a night of celebration, culinary delights, and recognition. The event underscored the importance of supporting the museum’s efforts to preserve Puerto Rican heritage and maintain its role as a thriving cultural institution.
