A group of middle school students from the School of Multimedia Arts and Engineering in Brooklyn visited HITN for a hands-on educational experience called Student Spotlight.
The event offered an in-depth look at television production and the role HITN plays in the media landscape, highlighting the network’s focus on educational and culturally enriching content. The students toured the network’s facility, guided by industry professionals who demonstrated various aspects of live television production.
The opportunity was made possible through the support of New York State Senator Roxanne Persaud, who nominated the students for this unique experience.
As part of their visit, students participated in several interactive activities. They collaborated on writing a script for a short public service announcement (PSA), learning how to brainstorm ideas and refine messaging. The students also explored set design, discovering how elements such as lighting, backdrops, and props come together to create visually compelling spaces. They had the chance to rearrange props and adjust lighting to bring their creative ideas to life.
In the Master Control room, HITN’s engineering team introduced the students to the technology that ensures the smooth operation of a television network. The session provided insights into the technical side of broadcasting.
The experience culminated with the students stepping in front of the cameras to perform their PSA. Under the guidance of television producers and editors, they brought their scripts to life, gaining a practical understanding of the production process.
By the end of the visit, the students left with a deeper appreciation for the complexities of television production and inspiration for future creative pursuits. HITN’s Student Spotlight offered them a valuable opportunity to engage with media in a meaningful way and envision their own potential contributions to the industry.
